Dale - Timing advance is automatic - it's set by the advance mechanism inside the distributor. You can check if it's working with a timing light. Observe the timing at low idle (should be TDC), then again at high idle. If the advance is working the timing will advance to a point somewhere (34 deg if I recall correctly...) before TDC.
