Farmall H Transmission Question

I have a 1939 Farmall H...While working it, I heard a loud bang from the transmission and the hydraulics stopped working. It will go into gear (except reverse) with a lot of effort, but something is pretty wrong with it. Does this sound like a transmission problem? What could I check to find out more?

Also, do you have to split an H to replace the transmission and would a transmission or truck repair shop be able to rebuild this? I'm not sure if it's a project that I should tackle myself.
