I place the crank handle between the two output liftall pipes on the clutch side. The elbow of the crank lays on the rear liftall pipe. With regards to the starter, it sounds like you have a lot of resistance. If the cables are old from the battery to the starter switch to the starter, replace them. If that doesn't help, the starter might need new brushes. If those items are in top shape, the starter should spin decently on 6 volts.
