You make a good point about not opening attachments from people you don't know or trust but there is the potential for attack from people you do know and trust. These viruses get into someone's computer who you know and then send emails with viruses to everyone in their email address book. The best practice is not to open any attachments with an extension of .exe .com .bat .vbs unless you were expecting it or you verify that the individual "you trust" meant to send it to you. There may be other extensions to be leary of but that is what I'm coming up with of the top of my head.
