Your tractor was originally from factory with a positive ground 6 volt battery. The wiring for these tractors were actually quite simple if you knew how it worked. If you didn't know how the electrical system worked it was confusing as heck. Especially in later years when these tractors had ignorant operaters that eliminated some of the electrical functions and may even had converted it to negative ground or 12 volt battery. This makes it real hard to get the electrical system all figured out again. A 12 volt system is a definate improvement if it fuctions correctly and all electrical componants work. When you swich one over to 12 volt it is a matter of rewiring the whole thing up different. You have to switch light bulbs and change generater to a 12 volt generator or an alternator, and you might get by with the same starter for awhile but don't cranke it over to long at one time with that 6 volt starter. It will seem to take alot of abuse if you just hit the starter and then let right off and not just sit there and let it grind. You would probably change the ground to negative when switching to 12 volt. And you would need a different ampe meter I think. There has been alot of talk and confusion in here over Farmall electrical systems through the 1940's. Alot of people trying to convert and don't have any idea what they are doing. They just say the heck with the old system that they don't understand and slap a 12 volt battery in the battery box and then wright a message in here that says what do I do now. I think if people would take the time to figure out the actual system that was on the tractor when it was new and understand how it worked they would get along alot better in the electrical department when restoring or converting from 6 to 12.

A Lifetime of David Brown - by Samuel Kennedy. I was born in 1950 and reared on my familys 100 acre farm. It was a fairly typical Northern Ireland farm where the main enterprise was dairying but some pigs, poultry and sheep were also kept. Potatoes were grown for sale and oats were grown to be used for cattle and horse feeding. Up to about 1958 the dairy cows were fed hay with some turnips and after that grass silage was the main winter feed. That same year was the last in which flax was grown on the farm. Flax provided the fibre which w
