Phill Auten and FF316 are on the right track when it comes to fuel break down and formation of the varnish like residual. Also the gasoline in the tank deteriorates over time ,losing much of its potential energy. We snowmobilers know all about fuel stabilizers. The much smaller snowmobile carbs will varnish up during storage and will require cleaning if a stabilizer is not used. Bombardier recommends fuel stabilizers for their machines as do other companies.(Arctic Cat, Yamaha) You also preserve the gasoline in the tank. Fuel stabilizers are simple to use and not expensive..$3 per bottle. You don't need to drain carbs or tanks, not that the old fashioned way wouldn't work, its just easy to dump a bottle into the tank. I use it in the lawn tractor, the lawn mower, snowmobiles and farm truck. Two or three bottles will treat lots of fuel in the tanks. I've even dumped a few into the storage tank for over the winter. My experience is that fuel stabilizers do exactly what they claim to.My two cents from Mike in Exeter Ontario
