The change in the 230 engines occurred at the beginning of 1958. The change was primarily a relocation of the water pump from the lower left front side of the engine to directly behind the fan such that the fan bolted directly on the water pump shaft. These engines are interchangeable. However the compression on the 230 was raised from 6.1:1 to 7.3:1 as compared to the Super C and 200. I think the pistons were also changed to domed aluminum pistons to get the compression increase(similar to the Fire Crater pistons). If you want a hot rod Super C get a stock 404 engine. They are the C-135 and crank out 37 HP in the 404 (last Super C based tractor).They bolt right in. Some people have gone further and modified C-153 motors out of combines and swathers. On those engines you have to drill the crank for a pilot bearing and machine an insert for the hole left in the right side from the starter on the combine/swather. Then you have to try to weld it with Ni rod in or key it to give some strength. Lots of fun.
