Could be the primary diesel fuel pump. Drain it out and refill with 30w oil to level. Other than that you may have several other problems, white smoke usually means water in combustion, could be that gas valves are not closing properly, cracked head? Timing? Remember to run on gas before shutting down helps to clean out engine. One last thing, air in diesel lines will bleed out if you run on gas for awhile with return line open back to diesel tank.
