Red Dave and Andy have it right. There's no physical or engineering reason favoring one ground polarity over the other. Negative ground simply has become the modern standard for 12 volt systems - sorta like us North Americans all driving on the right side of the road. Earlier 6 volt systems were pretty much standardized on positive ground - reason(s) for which are lost to history. My personal preference for my stuff: 6 volts postive ground (for historical accuracy) and 12 volts negative ground (since it's nearly impossible to get a 12 volt positive ground alternator...)
