They were positive ground originally but you can swap it if so desired. You have to reverse the wires on the amp gauge. He needs to determine whether the coil was straight 12 volt or 12 volt with an internal resistor. The internal resistor type drops the voltage down to around 7 volts for the points. If it is a 12 volt with no internal resistor, then a ballast resistor needs to be added between the coil and the distributor. NAPA part 13ICR. First check the points for possible damage.
