The rings are probably worn and you are getting a little blow by. I've re-ringed and honed the cylinders of an old truck engine I once owned and that fixed it right up. Throw in some new rod bearings and you may be able to postpone a complete overhaul. Worn valve guides would let oil slip into combustion chamber and you would get a some smoke at the exhaust pipe, especially when you first crank up. If you use detergent oil, you engine will stay cleaner. Try 40 weight oil since your engine is so old and loose, the heavier oil may help reduce blow by and will be better considering the increased clearance of worn bearings, etc. caused by age.
