Here's what the owners manual says: 'To be sure of the best timing adjustment, operate the engine with the indicator on either side of the centre mark and set it in the position giving the most efficient operation'. They also say: The correct adjustment is obtained when the engine speed is maximum for a fixed load and engine operation is smooth, with clean exhaust.' Sounds like you have to play with it a bit to get it just right.
