I not 100% sure, but I think your tractor was 6 volt, positive ground from the factory. Many were changed over the years to 12 volt and/or negative ground. Take the voltage regulator off and examine it. There should be markings on it to tell you if it is positive or negative ground and the voltage it should operate at. If there is no information, find the manufacturer and part number and a friendly local parts house or starter/generator shop should be able to look it up for you. After you determine what you have, hook it up that way see if that corrects the problem. You may have fried the regulator if it was hooked up backwards. If you had it right, it still sounds like the regulator may be overcharging.
