Reposting Thanks on Hydraulics with a couple questions, Please respond

Hi all. I'm reposting my thanks on the previous answers complete with it's questions. I realize this shows my ignorance but I'm just trying to fully understand everything here. I guess this part is more generalized But if someone can lend a hand I'd be extremely grateful. thanks (reposted below:)
Thanks all for your input. Now I have something to work with tomorrow. But if simply pluming the return line would work then why wouldn't it work just to leave the line disconnected, or is that because of the way they manufacture the cylinder, preventing it from allowing backflow? (Please forgive my ignorance. Thanks) As a future project, I'll certainly look into the valving system Mike and Haas both spoke about. Thank you again. This was very insightful.
