I have a 686 with the D-312 in it and it works great - fantastic tractor. I think the main difference is the engine used their were a number (D-312, D-310, D-29?, + others) The D-312 is a smaller version of the D-414 and shares a number of items. My 686 turns up to 1800 RPM vs 2400 on my dad's 966 with the D-414. One word of caution is that you need to keep the level of DC-4 (anti rust additive) in the coolant as this engine is a wet sleve design. This is true of all IH wet sleve engines (two I know of are the D-312 & D-414) Once I thought of turning up the RPM's to 2400 in hopes of gaining 10-15hp but discovered that the trans is a little dated. It looks a lot like an M transmission and uses the same axles (I used M rims for duals). 70 or so HP is probably all you want to run throught the trans. have fun - a great tractor

Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o
