I used a hacksaw to cut slots (three of them) across the thread of the pipe. The slots are just the width of the hacksaw blade and run the same direction as the length of the pipe. By doing this it seems to clean the existing threads of the manifold and will allow you to get more turns on the pipe and result in a good fit. It worked very well for me. Just don't cut the slots very deep.
