Broken IH wheel hub

I was pulling my 1944 farmall H this weekend. Just as I spun-out, I heard a loud pop. When I got off and looked, the small cast U-Shaped piece that tightens the center hub to the axle was broke in half. When I got the tractor loaded (finally), I noticed that I had sheared the key of the actual wheel and cracked the wheel. The key was allright on the small cast-iron piece, but because they are both cracked, the only things left that are good are the silver rim and the tire. I know I cannot fix it, but what I am trying to figure out, is how it happened. This is not a high horsepower H, I was pulling in the stock class. I had just tightend it the week before. Any ideas?
