As long as the water level does not get low, a small leak would have no effect on the thermosyphon action. If you have the radiator boiled out while the radiator is off, be sure to flush out the block and head as best you can with a water hose. Put a piece of tubing extension on it to reach back in there as far as you can. Will help to unbolt the fittings on the head and block that connect to the radiator, but you will need to get new gaskets if you do that. With a new hose and some silicone sealer, you should be able to get your system leak free even if you do have some pitting.
