William the L terminal on the voltage regulator is for the lights but it should work for the coil switch. The cable from the bat terminal should be hooked to the negative side (i.e. right post when the gauge is laying down. You might have a wire from that post going to the screw on the lights next to the fuse. The cable from the battery, via the starter switch or whatever, should go on the left post.
