Just did this a couple of weeks ago, and had the same problem. This is what I did. Screw that gear up on the threads so that the top of the shaft and the gear are flush. Then, I took a piece of HARD wood, not soft pine or the likes, lay it on top of the gear and shaft. Then I stood on a bucket and whacked on it with a 5 lb. hammer. Don't beat the life out of it, cause you may miss and that would be bad on something. That piece of hard wood is forgiving enough not to do any damage to any casting or shaft. It took several whacks, but it came and no damage was done. Good luck, if you need more info, ask.
