Haven't noticed any noise with or without hydraulics operating. Sometimes seems like a lot of drag on engine when I operate the hydraulics but maybe just cold oil. Engine doesn't seem to miss, just doesn't seem to have the power it should and have noticed at times I get air pushed down the intake through carburator. Also have noticed it doesn't seem to run as good when I get the timing set just right as it does a bit advanced. Will check the gear the weekend if I can get to it, as you say shouldn't be too far in to do that.
