Harry that is not an uncommon problem. There is a big pin that connects the shifting lever to the deck. Remove that pin and then you can remove the shifter assembly. You can then take a large screwdriver and line up the 3 shifting fork slots which should put the gears back into neutral. Install the shifting lever and you are cleared for takeoff. Take a look at the bottom of the shifter. It might be pretty worn. That can be built up or you can find another shifting lever. Good luck!!
