Buckeye Al: Appreciate yours and everyone else's feedback. Lots of good leads on this thing. I gave it a fresh start again today. Cleaned and regapped points, new sparkplugs, new plug wires, and rerouted the fuel line that runs from the fuel pump to the carb. I wrapped around the engine block and came within 3/4" of the exhaust manifold before going into the carb. Ran like a top when I started it up, but I have been in that moment of happiness before. Going to run the heck out of it tomorrow when it is hot and see what happens. Your thought and experience with heat warping the manifold is something I have wondered about, but never pulled them to check them out. If tomorrow the problem returnswhen it heats up (and I guess I expect it to - had my hopes up so many times), I am going to pull the manifolds, check them for cracks with magnaflux shop unless an obvious gasket leak, get new gaskets and reinstall and hope. Thanks again.
