Russell - You probably had a bad connection at one of the battery cables. Moving the cables around while reconnecting the battery backward may have caused the bad connection to reestablish, hence the ability to start. The temporary polarity reversal is not likely to have caused any permanent damage. However to be safe I recommend polarizing the generator again. With the motor off, momentarily connect the BAT and GEN terminals on the cutout or voltage regulator. When you restart the ammeter should indicate charge if the generator is working properly. Also a good idea to clean and retighten all the battery cable connections - especially the ground to the frame.
