The 424 I had was a gas, so if may be different that the diesel. I would not use steel wool. I'd try to find a replacement at a salvage dealer. There are several that advertise on this site, or put an ad in the classifieds, and one will likely contact you. I find it strange that the screens detiorated like that. Every old tractor I've looked at has had good screens in the air cleaner, except for the one that had them missing entirely. Where is the blowby coming out?? I assume through the crankcase vent, but I thought that was usually on at the bottom someplace.
