Mike it might be as simple as a bent shift fork but I have a feeling your second gear teeth are worn. That gear was used the most while planting and cultivating. You will have to remove the gas tank, seat assembly, steering post assembly and the flat belt pulley assembly before removing the lid. Be careful, it is fairly heavy.
