You ask good questions. As I see it, only two things can cause the trans input shaft to continue to be driven when the clutch is depressed. 1. A bad pilot bearing. 2. The clutch disk continues to be driven. For 2, either the clutch is not disengaging or for some reason, the disk stays in contact with flywheel or pressure plate. Your splines look pretty rusty and dry. Could it be that your disk is not free to "center up" or move away from the flywheel or pressure plate?

By the way, my '53 SA also requires a pause before shifting. I eased the problem somewhat by using thicker 90-140W trans oil. Also quiets these somewhat whiny transmissions a little.
