charging or not

ok guys , I got the 10si+ new battery on 6 weeks ago on the H . I have been using it regularly since . but today the battery was dead . so I checked the volts at the battery with the tractor running and got 12 volts.( is this right). also at the bat terminal on the alternator with wire off it showed 4 volts even when I gave it some gas. my belt is fine . are these volts right or do I have a bad alternator? I need help! speed
