I think the idea is to first "clean" w/ whatever you would normally use as a parts cleaner -- then degrease w/ alcohol, what we used to call de-natured, now sold as alcohol solvent at any hardware store. You could use acetone but it costs more, its toxic, and it may "eat" some plastic parts.
