I use a Fluke 78 multimeter at work to test rpm. It uses an inductive pickup. It can be set for 2 stroke or 4 stroke engines. Our lawnmower mechanic loves it. You can also get magnetized tape and put it on the end of the crankshaft. You will need the lazer gun to go along with it though. If you know someone who works at a diesel pump shop they might let you borrow the tape and gun. Or any modern ag shop should have a Fluke 78 especially a JD dealership.
