We always used the two person system suggested by others. The person running the saw keeps their feet planted and nothing under foot. The other person does the moving around, as they are away from the blade.

My grandfather used to have me hold the end being cut off and toss it onto a truck once it was cut. Not bad for limb wood, but more scary than I like with an unshielded blade. I usually let it drop, but if you let too big a pile build beware of a piece falling back onto the blade and causing a nasty kickback.

I'd check the blade over for cracks, just in case.
