volt reg adjustment?

I just got a super M Saturday. It wasn't charging, so I checked the terminals at the voltage regulator and found they were getting voltage. So, I took the cover off the voltage regulator and closed the gap on the lower contact points (I just used a screwdriver and pushed the contact in.) The guage showed the battery was charging. Is this an OK thing to do, and is there an adjustment I can make so that I don't have to take the cover off the voltage regulator everytime I need to recharge the battery? In the archives there's a reference to adjusting the tension on the contact points, but I don't know how that's done.
