positive vs negative grounds

I've been reading the posts on converting from 6-12 volts and changing the ground and now I've got a question. I know the six volt systems are positive ground and 12 volt alternator systems are negative ground. What is the ground if you use a 12 volt generator. I've always thought any 12 volt system was negative ground but now I'm not sure. I converted my 300U to 12 volt generator with negative ground and it works fine.
