Farmall A lubricant

I just bought a Farmall A and when checking the transmission oil it looks like they put white grease in it only it is thin like oil. It is not water mixed with oil, also how do you check the transmission, the final drives, and the pto . I can see where you add and where to drain them but I can't see how you check them, also what do you use, 90 wt.gear oil ? would appreciate some input. thanks
