Farmall engines make a bunch of mechanical clatter - even when they're in perfect condition. You can hear the valve mechanism, cam drive train gear noises, often a slight piston slap, etc. - even the fat fan belt has it's own subtle, weird sound. They're definitely NOT a silky smooth yuppie Lexus motor!! Now if you have a good muffler in place and you position your ear near the ground, you can easily hear a difference in the mechanical engine noise when you pull the plug wire off an offending cylinder that's got a bad rod bearing. Kinda hard to describe, but once you've done it and heard one, you'll recognize it right away.
