I have not used silicone, but have used non hardening gasket sealer. I have coated the bolt or stud with it, coat the internal threads, and screwed it in. I always do that with a bolt that goes through into the liquid of the tractor. Never seem to have had any leaks. On some of the Farmalls I have worked on there seem to be some random holes that are drilled all the way through the casting. The casting and drilling process must not have been that exact in those days. My Farmall MD I recently restored had several bolts on the axle assy drilled all the way thru. Roger
