Don't worry about the wire or the starter. The starter is perfectly capable of operating at 12v and will not get hot or burn up. A small wire will only give the starter reduced voltage, so if it runs on 10v, who cares? I have run 6v starters on 12v with 4 ga wires for years with no problems, same with 2 ga.
