the coil will work either way BUT when the polarity is not correct the points will not last quite as long ,I have some liturature from way back in the late 50's that explaines this. If the coil polarity is correct the point build up will occur on the fixed point, And the moveable point(The one that rubs on the cam) will crater. Most of us will have to use a magnifying glass to see this. As our tractors are not run many hours like the autos and trucks of yesteryear this will not be too apparent,And probaly not persent a problem. Also the heat buildup in points yrs. ago caused many to go to "vented points" (the points had a small hole in the center of them) also much like polarity switches in welding, one can dissipate heat in to the grounded point (fixed one)much more readly than the moveable one Hope this helps.
