This sounds like what I went through to get that dang JD 4400 gasser combine going. The rotor position to the number one spark plug was entirely different then what was shown in the book. I found out later from the previous owner that the distributor had been removed and rebuilt. 1. Get the number one piston on top dead center on the compression stroke. 2. Remove the distributor cap. 3. Loosen the two distributor clamp bolts. 4. Turn on the coil ignition. 5. Turn the distributor housing until the points spark. 6. Turn off the coil ignition. 7. Tighten the housing bolts. 8. Note the position of the rotor. The post on the distributor cap that aligns with the rotor should be wired to the number 1 spark plug. I.E. stick the cap back on and wire to number 1. 9. Then wire clockwise to 3, 4 and 2. 10. Turn on the coil ignition, crank her and see what happens!!
