can't get seal off counter shaft of SM

I have the Liftall out of my SM and have taken the top trans. shaft seal off with no problems. My counter shaft does not have a nut as shown in my I&T shop manual. It only has a 1/2" solt which a cross coupling piece mates the counter shaft to the input shaft of the liftall. Is the shaft threaded and the end that I'm seeing basically a nut with a slot in it? I have the three bolts out of the bearing retainer and it is loose, but won't slip off of the front end of the counter shaft. Any help will be appreciated. Joe
