I love this website. Getting all my questions answered. Last summer, I baled a 3000 bales of hay and straw with my "H" and found that she was not turning enough revs to make 540 PTO speed. I was also hauling an 8 ton wagon behind that on an occasional steep grade so that didn't help either. This fall, I sawed about 20 cord of wood with "H" and decided to turn the fast idle up on the governor. I think I'm still a little conservative. Any way the manual says I can turn 1650 to get 540 PTO. If I'm not mistaken the governor weights are in as far as they will go at maximum governed speed ( I never had the nerve to run the engine with the access cover off the governor) so isn't there a limit especially when I get to the maximum horsepower? Anyway to deal with my problem, I thought I'd use a tach on the PTO shaft and set 540 rpm there, forgetting about engine rpm for the moment. What about this approach? Isn't it steady power I want?
