Everything here is from memory out of Randy Leffingwell's book. IH started with the A, B, H, and M in 1939. The H and the M were physically the same size so they could used the same mounted implements. The A and B both used the C-113 engine and both had the drop axles common to the offset Farmalls, the difference between the two being the tread spacing--the B has axle extensions on both sides of the tranny and not just the right side. Still, I think they were both considered a single-row tractor. In the mid-forties, IH decided there was a need for a lighter two-row tractor than the H. They mated the A/B C-113 engine to a straight-axle rear end and called it the C. Actually, I believe it was originally referred to as the straight-axle B. In any case, the C and the H are not redundant tractors. Boy, I hope I got the sequence of events more or less correct. Chris
