Classified Ad Search Help

There have always been some problems with trying to search for what you want in the classifieds. You enter some search words and get things you don't expect or can't enter words to get everything you want. Here are some examples:
  • you enter john deere and miss all the ads that were listed with JD.
  • you enter H to find all the Farmall Hs and get all the JD Hs
  • you enter ford and find that ads listed from any place with ford embedded in the name appear
There are numerous such examples where you enter some words and the results are different than what you expect.

In order to make searching the classifieds more specific to what you are looking for, the classifieds search box can have some special characters added that let you get just what you want. Once you've figured out what the search should be, from then on you can immediately pull up the classifieds you want to see without getting ads you don't want to see or having to do multiple searches.

If the following sounds hard, just look at the examples below. This is the list of the special characters you can put in your search to find just what you want.

Special Characters to use in searches:
  • + = must contain the word you enter
  • no plus = may contain the word you enter but it doesn't have to
  • | = this means "or" which means you can have it look for multiple words that may or may not appear.
  • "word" = quotes mean that the word or words can't appear within another word
  • no quotes = may occur in another word, e.g., tran can match transmission, transfer, etc

Examples:
  • If I want to find all Allis-Chalmers B, C, CA, and IB series, I'd put in something like:

    +"Allis-Chalmers|Allis Chalmers|AC" +"B|C|CA|IB"

  • I could even allow for the fact that the name is often misspelled by using:

    +"Chalmers|Chamblers|Chambers|AC" +"B|C|CA|IB"

  • If I wanted all Ford N-Series and Farmall M in one search, I could type:

    +"ford|farmall" +"9n|2n|8n|m"

  • If I'm only interested in round bale hay equipment, I could enter:

    +"hay" +bale +round

Try entering some of these examples or similar ones you can think of yourself and see what the results are. Let us know if you can think of other ways to make searching more specific.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract. ... [Read Article]
