Finished Plowing Got Drenched

Ten seconds after finishing plowing today (I was just pulling out of the end of the field) I got drenched by rain. NO COMPLAINTS FROM ME!!! So far have gotten about a fourth to a third of an inch according to nearby city reports. Praying for more of course. Those plowed up clumps (boulders???) were huge. I didn't get a chance to disc it all to break it apart, but the rain should soften it some.

I'd bet that even if you get a foot of rain, when you run a disc over it, some of those clumps will still be dry in the middle.

RR, I'll bet you're right! I wanted to moldboard for several reasons: 1) I wanted to use Ollie. Darn, he's a fun tractor! As an LP, he's just so quiet and powerful. Kinda reminds me of some darn good draft horses I've driven - - just quiet, calm and POWERFUL! 2) I'm trying to control weeds without too much chemical. I've acquired an old pull-type combine with a Scour Kleen and it removed a huge amount of weed seed this year. And, by plowing deeply I'm hoping to have fewer weeds. 3) by deep plowing, I'm hoping the rain WHEN it comes, will soak in better with less runoff. In short, I plowed largely for fun! Crazy, I know, but I'm a small time farmer, gonna be 78 in a couple days and if I don't have some fun now, when am I gonna get around to it? kelly

RR, I'm not positive of the number, but I think it is a John Deere F145H. It is semi-mounted, NOT 3 point, has a pneumatic rear tail wheel tire and four 16 bottoms. There are a couple advertised on tractorhouse.com which look like mine. One is advertised by S & H Farm Supply of Lockwood, MO.

JD F145 are good plows. I owned & plowed with a 4X16 F145 for several yrs.

You would have gotten very drenched because I received almost 10'' of rain Sunday Night/Monday morning. A USDA soil conservation lake that I surrendered lease on pasture 6 weeks earlier due to lack of water filled up overnight. Thank God for the much needed rainfall.

Pulled a 145H 4-16 for a couple decades. As corn improved here in the upper Midwest it got difficult to get the
cornstalks to pass through, but covered a lot of hours each fall with it. Actually had a second one to keep the parts
going and keep one in good shape. Was a good plow, other than getting heavy cornstalks through it.

Went to an ihc 720 4-18 on a bigger tractor, it had a little more clearance for the trash.

RR, sorry I missed your question about the combine. Yup, I got a Deere model 42 pull type combine. It has a Scour Kleen and it seems to me that is a miraculous device for removing weed seeds. kelly P.S. BUT . . . obviously I don't need an Oliver 1850 on that combine. I think my Farmall H or Farmall 300 would be far more suitable. The Oliver 1850 stuck a rock in the cylinder so hard I had one H E double toothpicks time trying to get it loose!
Ole Ollie was great pulling the four bottom 16 plow and the 14', 20 disc harrow! Mostly I was in 2nd gear plowing. Discing was mostly third gear. I probably could have done fourth gear but it was too fast and rough in that plowed field. kelly
