Rain knocked down my hay.

Was planning on cutting about 3 acres of hay this afternoon but we had an overnight rain, about 1/2 inch. Problem is that it knocked alot of the hay over so its lying on the ground. It's happened to me before and my hay never seems to stand back up when it dries off. I have never noticed any of my neighbors fields knocked over.

Can anyone tell me why my hay falls over?

Thanks

2nd cut. Mix of tall fescue, orchardgrass and timothy. I think its the fescue that's down. It seems to mature way before the
others.

Thanks for the reply. I hope it is a reasonable quality of hay. I paid to have it plowed, power harrowed and reseeded last
fall. Anyway I am very new to haying, so have many questions. I hope asking what are probably dumb questions is okay on this
forum.

Thanks Mike

It is a problem we all have in very thick high quality production hay fields. By the time I get to bale the last of my fields,
a significant amount will be leaning over or down. A good mower will slide under it and cut it even if down. In these cases I
try to mow in a direction that slides the cutter bar under the hay. With the right kind of mower you can salvage 95% of the
hay. It will be very difficult if you are trying to cut it with a sickle bar mower.

Thanks for your reply. It's nice to hear I might have high quality hay. Anyway I have a newish small disc mower. I think I got about 85% of the field cut mostly even. In some places the hay was kind of flattened in a circle so was hard to decide what direction to start cutting from.
