table beets and weed control

I have been growing food for the poor folks the last few years. A neighbor has about 1 acre he would like to see put in production for the same reason. I am thinking
of doing beets, I would get the mono seed as thinning an acre would be a lot of work. I normally don't do chemicals but on a patch this big is there pre or post emerge
folks have used for this. I have old time tillage equipment so getting the ground ready isn't a problem. I wouldn't be able to do no till. THanks for any ideas.

So weeds are generally 2 types: broadleaves or grasses.

It is often easy to kill one type in the other type.

Beets are a broadleaf, so off the top of my head I think a product like Select would be labeled to kill grasses in Beets. There are many generic brands of this chemical, some will be labeled and some wont for garden crops........

Trying to kill the broadleaf weeds is more difficult. Beets are kind of fussy broadleaves so its going to be tougher to find something that works. There are products out there, but might have modest results and not kill every species of broadleaf weed. This is where you want to know what weeds you are starting with, to know what is best to use of the more limited options you have.

It will be mostly grass control as it is in lawn. Beets are a pretty quick crop I know I could use Post or Over the Top for grass after the beets are up. If I could do it preplant or right after planting would probably be easier. Having never used that stuff, I am guessing it would have to be put down with a real ag sprayer and not a hand held one to get even coverage.
