How long to wait to disk after plowing.

Can anyone give me an idea of how quickly after plowing with moldboard setup I should start disking? Especially with the hot spell with little relief in the next couple of weeks?

Thanks

It doesn't matter as long as the dirt isn't too wet to plug up the disks. If I'm plowing sod I like to plow in the fall and wait until spring to work it. The sod has a chance to break down and it works up better.

Here in the Midwest we plow in the fall. Leave it over winter freeze thaw and disk or preferably field cultivator in the spring.

My only criteria in clay is that you don't want to pack it. I like to have some dry matter on top to help keep the discs clean and aid in prevention of packing from tractor tires.

An example of what I do to work clay under its terms is that I plowed up a neighbor's field over the last couple of weeks and it was dry and rock hard as is dry clay. Rock hard clods were about the size of baseballs, hard and soft ball sizes. We got about 1.5 of rain over 2 days and the morning after it stopped I was on the field and it was perfect...just enough moisture to soften up the clay rocks and get them pulverized, but not enough to pack. Had the chain harrow hooked to the back of the disc and made a seedbed in one pass.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Has anyone ever planted a cover crop for the winter and then go back over with the disk or cultivator in the spring to seed for the following year?

Depends on your soil type , where i live we can have several different types in one field . Yes we have chased the plow with the disc same day but normally when working by myself i did all the plowing and this would give maybe a week or so before i hooked to the disc all depending on mother nature . Then disc everything and onto planting since for a good while i only had one tractor . Life was simple back then , one tractor one combine one plow one disc , corn planter and a grain drill. total amount invested under five K . I farmed with what i did not get sold .

Unless its old sod Id run a field cultivator over it instead of.a disk unless all you have is a disk . I prefer my power harrow over anything really

I'd plant a cover crop, personally like Crimson Clover probably could just over seed it into the plowed ground or just over seed it now and rough disk the seed in.Then work the ground up for planting next Spring when the ground will be more workable.

I find that planning on spring planting of anything is iffy due to uncertainties of the weather. Lately springs have been wet and stayed wet making it difficult to get summer crops planted before late May-June time line.....way too late to get much over a single cutting which is not financially adequate.
