Thorns in Hay

Neighbor is clearing his land of Locus outcroppings. The grass is superb but I don't want to cut and bale it for him because of problems with thorns and bovine digestion. You folks that live around Mesquite and Locust trees, what is a pass/fail gauge for thorns?
Thanks,
Mark

I would be more concerned about thorns causing tractor/equipment tire flats that thorns in hay being a problem to cattle. I think cattle will eat around the thorns. I have a mesquite tree infested pasture leased that I've witnessed my cows regularly eating the mesquite tree leaves from the trees.

I have been real lucky with the tires, actually utterly amazed....been working the 25 acre place in my 3rd year and have zero (knock
on wood) thorn penetrations requiring some sort of corrective action; few penetrations at all actually . Have been helping a neighbor
clear his newly acquired land, neglected for over 40 years of which I know. The bushes with the long thorns (over 1) are pretty easy
to spot and he is removing them.

The ones that I think might be OK are the thin ones under an inch. The pasture is bottom land covered in coastal and a gem of a hay
patch if the neighbors can clean out the Feral Hogs ( they are apt at the process), and he and I can resolve the thorn problem. when
you see cows trimming the trees in any pasture they occupy, it pretty much tells you that some little thorns won't be a
problem.....we'll see I guess.
Thanks Jim.
