The field has been fallow for approx. 20 years. Sandy loam, 4-6 inches loose soil and about 12 inches of hard pan.
I was messing around with the ripper today with the Ford 3000 in position control. I am running the ripper at about 16 inches. I dug a 3 ft by 2ft channel perpendicular to the cut. It looked pretty good. It went just below the hard pan and fractured the hardpan in a V to the surface.
But every time the ripper went too deep or hit more compact dirt I would have to lift the ripper a couple of inches or the tractor would stop and the tires would just spin. I was constantly adjusting the depth.
I thought if the tractor was in draft control the ripper would be all over the place as far as depth and might not fracture the hardpan.
So the question is should I be in draft control or position control.
