starting hay field

On June 3 I had co-op sold a mixture of grass seed on work up ground for a new hay field, it was suppose to have rain that night but didn't it didn't rain for 3 weeks, all I got was 30 acres of weeds. Two questions
what should I do next bush hog it off and start over again this fall or do it in the spring or I have someone else wanting to put in back in crops.I live in southern Indiana

thanks,

Those seeds should still be there. Maybe brush hog the weeds, but the grass should still grow.

Yea, mid summer is a terrible time to try to start a hay field. Corn planting time is spring, or in September when it’s cooler and maybe wetter is much better times.

So what did you plant, grass, grasses, grass and clover, or alfalfa? They all get called hay, makes a difference what I would do from here.

When in doubt, mowing down the weeds is a good idea no matter what you do otherwise......

I've had the best luck with new seedings in the fall. I've done spring seedings but sometimes it gets real dry to soon around here and they don't do so well. I've read about people frost seeding - planted just before all the snow has melted in the spring. Never tried that.

I would bush hog it down and see what develops by mid September.

It is very common to have a very weak looking field like that, and catch a fall rain with the weed flush out of the way and it suddenly comes to life. Do not leave a heavy mat of weeds laying on top, finely ground or thin stuff, but if you have serious weeds like a thicket you don’t want that much junk killing off the new seedlings.

Tho, you did plant at a poor time, month earlier at least or 2 months later At least would have been much better here anyhow.

Years ago I have some newly purchased ground cleared with a dozer, after it was cleared I had lime applied and then disced the ground a few times and had grass seed and fertilizer applied.
This was in early July and we had a dry summer, no rain till late Sept, ground layed bare except for a few weeds until a week after it rained when everything started turning green, I had pretty much given up on the field but the seed still sprouted and after applying more fertilizer in the spring I got a good hay crop from the field.

Your seed will still be there and should sprout after some rain, but the urea you applied will have leached out by now, but I'd probably wait till spring before applying any more.
